This was a momentous brainstorm, as I have never seen or heard of this type of device used for visual tracking of your hawk when flying at or near dusk, or at night, and for use when the hawk is temporarily "lost" for one reason or another due to carrying, being overweight, etc, after the sun goes down! It came to me as I was "piddling" in my garage the other day...

This VISUAL LIGHT BEACON telemetry "transmitter" is the same size as a leg mount transmitter and weighs approximately 4 grams total weight, without the trailing wire antenna. It attaches to the anklet or grommet, or you can use a bell type bewit, and is easily visible while the hawk is on the ground or in a tree. The LIGHT BEACON telemetry transmitter flashes both alternating

RED

and

GREEN

light from a single solid state device. Each light color alternately blinks approximately twice a second, for use with both regular binoculars or night vision binoculars or many spotting scopes. The batteries last a very long time, using the same batteries as most leg mount radio telemetry transmitters, and the unit is water resistant and virtually indestructible. This unit can be turned on and off by the press of a finger. This visual telemetry transmitter is completely solid state with no moving parts. The unit uses two LR41 watch batteries (replaceable) which are similar to 392 radio telemetry transmitter batteries.

Note: Bewits are large & long enough for a large female Red-Tailed Hawk tarsus. For smaller hawks, you may punch holes closer together to custom fit the beacon transmitter to your hawk.
